What the renter sees, step by step
The two-minute check-in from the renter's side: their details, licence, ID, your agreement, and the deposit.
When you send the renter link, this is what your customer goes through. It opens in their phone's browser: no app, no account, no password. The whole thing takes about two minutes.
The steps, in order
- Their details: full name as it appears on their licence, date of birth, home address and mobile number. Email is optional. They need to be 18 or over to hire.
- Their driving licence: a DVLA check code. They get this free from the DVLA in about a minute, and there is a button in the check-in that takes them straight there. See ID and DVLA licence checks.
- Their identity: they photograph their ID document and take a quick live selfie, matched through Stripe. You see the result, never their documents.
- The agreement: they read your rental agreement and sign it on screen with a finger. If they cannot draw a signature, they can type their full name instead, which counts as their signature.
- The deposit: they acknowledge the deposit you are taking. Depending on your firm, this may be a temporary hold on their card. A hold is not a charge: no money is taken, the amount is reserved until the hire ends.
Why each step is there
These protect the renter as much as they protect you. The licence and ID checks mean a genuine renter is never held up by someone else's fraud. Photographing the car at pickup means a scratch that was already there can never be pinned on them later.
The fee
There is a small one-off fee the renter pays for the checks on their booking, shown to them during check-in. It covers the verification for this hire, so the checks cost you nothing per hire.
After they finish
Once checked in, the renter keeps the link. The same link is used again at pickup to photograph the car, and again at return. You confirm it is them against their verified check when they collect the car, so they bring the physical licence they used.
